About History Split
History Split puts you at a real fork in history, with only what people knew at the time, and asks: what would you have done?
Each decision sets out the year, the situation and the information available then, with no hindsight. You pick one of two options. Only then do we show what actually happened and how other players chose.
Three kinds of information, kept apart
- Fact: what actually happened. A short, sourced account of the real decision and its result. Every decision lists the sources it is based on, such as national archives, museums, NASA, presidential libraries and encyclopaedias.
- Player choice: what visitors say they would have done. Totals from people who played here. They show opinion, not truth, and they are not a scientific survey.
- Possible consequences: analysis and speculation. What might have happened on the other path. Nobody can know this, so it is always labelled and written with care.
No right answers
Matching the historical decision does not make you right, and choosing differently does not make you wrong. Many of these decisions are still debated by historians, and where a topic is politically sensitive we set out more than one view. Your history profile is a game, not a personality test.
Daily decision
Every day at midnight UTC there is a new Today’s Decision. Everyone gets the same historical fork and one choice each. You see what happened straight away, but the worldwide split stays sealed until the next midnight UTC.
