Cookies
Last updated 8 October 2026
CrumbJar Polls itself sets only first-party cookies, and only ones that are needed for the site to work or that you have asked for. Every one is listed below.
Advertising
There are no adverts at the moment, so nothing sets an advertising cookie. If adverts are switched on, this page changes with them, and Google's advertising cookies stay off until you agree in the cookie message.
The rest of CrumbJar, and Google’s advertising cookies while adverts are on, are listed on the CrumbJar cookie policy.
| Name | Type | Purpose | Expires |
|---|---|---|---|
| ffv | Strictly necessary | A signed, random, private identifier for this browser. Stops the same browser voting twice on one question and lets you take part without an account. | 400 days (about 13 months) |
| XSRF-TOKEN | Strictly necessary | A random value compared against a token in the page, which stops another website submitting forms as you. | 60 days |
| crumbjar-session | Strictly necessary | Your browser session, which keeps you signed in once you sign in and remembers a sign-in with Google, Facebook or X while it is under way. | 60 days |
| cj_unlock | Strictly necessary | Only before launch, while the site is password-protected: remembers that you entered the password, shared with the rest of CrumbJar so you are not asked again on each section. | 30 days |
| cj_adult | Strictly necessary | Set by the CrumbJar sign-in, not by Polls, and only for a signed-in adult: a signed note that this browser belongs to an adult, so questions on difficult topics can be shown. Polls only reads it. | 30 minutes |
| cj_id | Strictly necessary | Set by the CrumbJar games sign-in, not by Polls, for anyone signed in: your public username, a scrambled account reference, whether the account belongs to an adult, and when it runs out, signed so it cannot be changed. Polls only reads it, to check whether you are an adult; it does not sign you in to Polls. It holds no email address. | 30 minutes |
| hv_gn | Functional | The display name you chose, so you do not have to retype it. | 1 year |
| hv_theme | Functional | Your light or dark preference, if you set one. The page reads it to pick colours before it draws. | 1 year |
Turning them off
You can clear or block these in your browser. Blocking the identity and form-protection cookies (ffv and XSRF-TOKEN) will stop you voting or commenting, because the site can no longer tell one browser from another or protect form submissions.
