Two Bands, One Contract January 1962
You are advising Dick Rowe, head of artists and repertoire (A&R) at Decca Records in London.
On New Year’s Day, Decca’s studio recorded audition sessions with two young guitar groups. The label is expected to offer a contract to one of them.
Known information
- The first group is a four-piece from Liverpool. They recorded 15 songs, mostly cover versions plus three of their own compositions.
- They have a strong local following and long club residencies in Hamburg, but no national profile. Their manager runs a record shop and is new to the music business.
- The second group is based in Dagenham, much closer to Decca’s London studios.
- Both groups play the guitar-led pop that is popular with teenagers, but no one at the label knows how long that style will last.
