My dad wants me to take the family dog when I move out. Do I have to?
The complainant says
I'm 24 and moving into my first flat. We got a Labrador when I was 14, and technically he was 'my' dog because I begged for him. Since then, the whole family has looked after him. He's now ten.
My dad has said that since he was always my dog, he should come with me. My new flat is a one-bed with no garden, the landlord doesn't allow pets, and I work in an office all day. I love him, but it wouldn't be fair on him.
The other side says the dad, as the complainant tells it
My dad says I promised to take responsibility for the dog at 14, he never wanted one, and that he and my mum want to be able to travel now the kids have left home. He thinks I'm backing out of a commitment.

A promise made at 14 is not a binding contract. Also, the dog's welfare comes first and a one-bed flat with no garden isn't it.
Maybe you help pay for a dog sitter when they travel? Middle ground.
This is really kind and fair.
Your dad's had ten years to get used to the dog. He's family now, and families share a dog.
A ten year old Lab alone in a flat all day would be miserable. You're right.
