Friends of mine had a gift list at a department store with lots of expensive homeware. The cheapest item left was a £90 cake stand. I don't have a lot of money at the moment and couldn't afford that.
I put £50 cash in a card with a nice message. At the wedding one of the couple said, laughing, that 'cash is a bit impersonal' and asked if I'd seen the list. I felt humiliated. They then mentioned it again to a mutual friend.
The couple say they put a lot of effort into the list, and cash in a card feels like an afterthought. They say they were only joking and didn't expect me to be offended.

Gift lists should always have a range of prices. Whoever made a list starting at £90 made a choice.
